Dermal Fillers Pre and Post Op Care

What to do before your Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, or Sculptra Injections.
**Please note that ALL our products contain Lidocaine, and we cannot treat you if you're allergic to any lidocaine products**

One Week Prior

  • Avoid blood thinning medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen or Aleve. ginko biloba, Vitamin E supplements, St. John's Wort, flax oil, cod liver oil, ginseng and garlic pills unless prescribed by your physician as medically necessary.
  • Do not stop any prescription blood thinners. Consult with your physician, and let us know.
  • No dental work or colonoscopy at least 2 weeks prior
  • Please plan accordingly. When you are dealing with needles, there is always a possibility of bruising. While we always do our best, we cannot promise anyone an absolute "no bruising or swelling" procedure. It also takes approximately 2 weeks for any side effects and swelling to subside.
  • Please know that lip injections can activate cold sores. Please check with your physician about preventive medications for cold sores.
  • Take Vitamin C daily
  • No active infections that are being treated with antibiotics
  • If you develop an infection, cold sore, or a rash on the area to be treated, please call us to reschedule.

At Least 2 Days Prior

  • Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic acid, or any "anti-aging" products
  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated
  • A supplement called Arnica, can be started and may lessen bruising.

24 Hours Prior To Treatment

  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages
  • Hydrate! Drink at least 64 oz of water and be sure to moisturize the injection area prior to your visit.

As A General Rule

  • Plan to schedule your dermal fillers at least 2 weeks before any special events to allow for possible bruising, swelling, or redness to subside.
  • Buy Arnica gel or cream (available at any drugstores) if you're prone to bruising.
  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the dermal filler treatment could contribute to another eruption of cold sores.? Please contact your primary care physician if you can take a preventive medication.

General Post Care Instruction

  1. You will most likely be bruised and/or swollen following this procedure. Ice and anti-inflammatory agents (Tylenol and Ibuprofen) can be helpful. The swelling and bruising can last up to 10 days. Avoid sun tanning until the bruising has subsided.
  2. Try to keep your head elevated remainder of the day. Sleep upright on your back the night following the procedure to help reduce swelling.
  3. DON’T worry, the swelling will come down.
  4. Avoid Retin-A, Glycolic Acid or any irritating products for 4 days following the procedure.
  5. Do not touch or massage the treated area.
  6. Do not exercise for 24 hours following the procedure. Rest: try to rest for 12-24 hours.
  7. The treated area may look asymmetrical or uneven (especially in the lips) for up to 10 days following the procedure, this is normal.
  8. The treated area may feel firm when touched, this is normal. The filler may be palpable and feel temporarily firm for the first week.
  9. Bathing: Normal showering is permitted the day after the procedure.
  10. Do not use Clarisonic face brush for at least 2 weeks post procedure.
  11. Makeup: Do not apply makeup to the treated area for 24 hours after the treatment as this will increase the chance of scarring.
  12. Drink lots of water for optimal results, as some hyaluronic acid based fillers absorbs water.
